District V’s  Go Green Program
The Power of Five
Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Resist, and Respect

Reduce-Output of waste to ensure you’re using materials efficiently-composting will reduce yard waste.  The average person throws out 1,500 lbs. of garbage each year.  If you compost and recycle you can reduce that to 375 lbs.

Recycle- Saves natural resources- By recycling one ton of paper you save: 17 trees, 6,953 gallons of water, 463 gallons of oil and 587 pounds of air pollution.

Reuse- Using compost and tree clippings for mulch, rainwater for watering, and grass clippings for fertilizer.  The average 1/2 acre lawn generates 4 1/2 tons of grass clippings, or 334 thirty -gallon bags full each season.  (Let sleeping grass lie, it turns into compost and fertilizes the lawn saving money and time)

Resist- Using harmful pesticides to provide a pesticide-free sanctuary for pollinatior pals, such as butterflies and bees.

Respect- Change the way you buy, seeking products that are more environmentally friendly-solar outdoor lighting versus electric-powered fixtures, paper instead of plastic, etc....
